Joe Adams Village
Named for noted southern author and patron of the arts Joe Adams,
the Institute at Palm Key is undertaking the development of Joe Adams
Village to showcase southern heritage art and artists. Consisting
of four structures and organic gardens, the Village will be a regional
and national example of sustainable and environmentally responsible
design while serving as a design/build experience for students of
the region. As a showcase of southern heritage, Joe Adams Village
will consist of a ‘Meeting House’ which will serve as
the project hub while setting the tone for the village and ‘Southern
Architecture and Design’ in the spirit of famed architect Samuel
Mockbee. The Village will highlight southern music and film devoted
to the south's blues musicians and to the best in southern movies
and will feature a permanent collection of art by self taught visionary
artists from the rural south. |

DO YOU KNOW?
What
is a Salt Marsh?
A salt marsh is a grass meadow without trees that is flooded
and drained by the daily tides. A typical salt marsh is located
along a winding tidal
creek or river, such as the Broad River at Palm Key, or on
the lee side of an Atlantic sea island or barrier island.
Why does
the water rise & fall in the Salt Marsh?
The rise and fall of water in the salt marsh is caused by
tides. The fluctuating water levels of tides are created by
the changing gravitational pull of the moon and sun on the
seas. The average time between high and low tides is 6-1/4
hours. Palm Key’s high tide ranges from six to eleven
feet.
What
is the Lowcountry?
It is the area of South Carolina which lies between Charleston,
SC and Savannah, GA where the fertile coastal plain melts
into the Atlantic Ocean. This name, coined by local folk generations
ago, accurately describes this land, most of which is a sub-tropical
world, rich with animal, plant & marine life.
It is dark woodlands
with moss-draped live oaks and tall pines bordering tupelo
gum and maple swamps intertwined with creeks and rivers draining
to the sea. As these waterways widen and become salty on their
journey oceanward, they become bordered by vast acres of beautiful
salt marshes. A substantial portion of the Lowcountry consists
of these waterways and salt marshes. |
